CAPTIVA ISLAND COASTAL WEEK APRIL, 2026
Brought to you by Jensen’s Marina & Cottages
Captiva Island, Florida
April 2026
Marine and Weather Forecast
Welcome to Island Time
The month of April on Captiva Island brings some of the most consistent and exciting inshore fishing of the year. As water temperatures stabilize in the mid-70s, the “Big Three“, Snook, Redfish, and Spotted Seatrout, become highly active across the Pine Island Sound.
Whether you are casting from the causeway or navigating the lush grass flats, the spring transition is in full effect. Baitfish are moving into the passes, and the predatory species are following close behind, making this an ideal time for both seasoned anglers and families to get out on the water.
April Water Highlights
- Bait Activity
Large schools of whitebait (scaled sardines) are appearing on the flats and near the passes. - Water Clarity
Generally excellent, though afternoon sea breezes can stir up the Gulf-side waters. - Inshore Movement
Fish are transitioning from their deeper winter holes to shallower grass flats and mangrove edges. - Wildlife Sighting
Expect to see increased manatee activity and migratory birds returning to the mangroves.

Local Environmental Conditions
Pine Island Sound & Captiva Pass
Moderate breezes and rising water temperatures define the early April fishing landscape.
Note:
Water clarity is currently high; polarized sunglasses are highly recommended for spotting fish on the flats and around oyster bars.
Tide Predictions
Captiva • Pine Island Sound • Galt Island
Captiva Island
- Tides provide excellent flow through Redfish and Captiva Pass this week.
- Look for strong outgoing tides in the early mornings, creating “choke points” for hungry predators.
Pine Island Sound
- High water levels are pushing fish deeper into the mangrove roots.
- Target the edges of the “pot holes” on the flats during the incoming tide as water begins to cover the grass.
Gulf Coast & Surrounding Areas
- Beachfront fishing is picking up as Snook begin their seasonal move toward the surf.
- Redfish are steadily patrolling the troughs on the Gulf side during calmer mornings.
Additional Local Tide Info & Moon, Sun & Astronomical Data
Primary Moon Phase
- The New Moon on April 17 will lead to higher-than-average tidal swings.
Full Moon Phase
- Expect very aggressive feeding patterns during the days leading up to the Full Moon on April 1.
Tactical Tip
- During peak moon phases, focus on fishing moving water—the faster the tide, the better the bite.
Tidal Influence
- Low tides in the afternoon will expose many oyster bars; navigate with caution in the back bays.
What It Means for Flats/Backcountry Fishing
An overview of how the “Big Three” are responding to current spring conditions:
SNOOK (Centropomus undecimalis)
- Habits
Moving out of rivers and back creeks toward the passes and beaches. - Feeds
Highly aggressive on topwater lures at sunrise; transitioning to live pilchards or shrimp as the sun rises. - Tactics
Target dock pilings with current flow or the deep shadows of overhanging mangroves.
REDFISH (Sciaenops ocellatus)
- Habits
Tailing on the shallow grass flats during the early morning rising tides. - Feeds
Searching for crustaceans; gold spoons or scented soft plastics are highly effective right now. - Tactics
Focus on “tunnels” through the mangroves or the edges of oyster bars in the Sound.
SPOTTED SEATROUT (Cynoscion nebulosus)
- Habits
Holding in 3-5 feet of water over mixed grass and sand bottoms. - Feeds
Smashing popping cork rigs with live shrimp or soft plastic jigs. - Tactics
Look for “nervous water” or bait jumping on the flats to locate the larger “Gator” trout.
CONSERVATION NOTE
Please check the Florida Fish and Wildlife (FWC) website for current size and bag limits for these species.

Tackle
Pro Suggestions for April 2026
PRO TIP
Leader Line
Use a 20lb to 30lb fluorocarbon leader. April water is clear, and the Snook have sharp gill plates that can easily cut through lighter mono.
HERE FOCUS
- Captiva Pass
- Roosevelt Channel
- Buck Key
- Blind Pass
OFFSHORE FOCUS
- Nearshore reefs (3-5 miles)
- Spanish Mackerel
- Kingfish (starting to show)
- Mangrove Snapper

Summary Forecast & Fishing Outlook
Pine Island Sound & Captiva Area
- SNOOK
Expect the bite to intensify in the passes as they prepare for the summer spawn. - REDFISH
Look for larger schools to form on the flats as the water continues to warm. - SPOTTED SEATROUT
Consistent action on the flats; look for larger fish in the deeper potholes during low tide. - WEATHER
Watch for afternoon sea breezes that can create a “chop” on the water, this often triggers a bite.
